The “Gouria”, a beautiful custom from Greece, symbolises luck and prosperity. In many families, it is more than just a tradition; it’s a way to connect with our roots and draw positive energy into our lives.
I have always been fascinated by how religious the Greek people are, and the majority actively practice their faith. However, the Greek Orthodox religion adopted many ancient traditions from various eras, built upon them, or continued them with slight modifications, allowing the old and the new to coexist peacefully and filling everyday life with beliefs.
A Greek custom to bring luck
One such belief is that they put a beautifully decorated ornament, the “GOURIA” in their homes. It brings abundance and prosperity to its owner. The Greek word “gouri” means luck, and this small object has been a home decoration since ancient times.
Gouria is most commonly given as a gift during the Christmas season, as people prepare for the New Year.
How does a Gouria looks like?
There are many types of Gouria: it can be a bracelet, a pendant made of ribbons, or even a keychain. The important thing is that it must be hung or worn to bring the desired luck. In addition to the colourful ribbons, tiny pendants adorn them: pomegranate, ship, coin, horseshoe, four-leaf clover, onion, and the blue protective eye—all symbols representing abundance, safety, and a successful life ahead.
Make your own lucky charm!
Making the Guria is easy; we only need a handful of shiny ribbons or twisted cords in various colours and a couple of pendants. The ribbons must be tied with a bow and decorated with small adornments.
We can give it to someone we wish a happy new year, wear it ourselves, or decorate our home with it. The Gouria will bring luck to the entire family, including close friends.
This year, I wanted to play it safe and gifted each family member a little good luck charm. I like to make them, but I also enjoy browsing ETSY to find a personalised one and support a small business.
My personal favourite is Meli Rita. I love her products and how she packs them: her tastefully decorated little boxes arrive complete with tiny freebies and a personal message.
