Summer reading

While waiting at Athens Airport, I wandered into the bookshop. Of course I found a couple of books to buy. I love to read stories related to the places I am visiting.

Here are some suggestions for what to read while vacationing in Greece, especially if you are following my lead and would like to read books related to the places you visit.

On Crete:

Victoria Hislop’s ‘The Island’ is a must.

Historical fiction at its best is a gripping family tale based on thoroughly researched true events. One of my all-time favourites.

Nadia Marks ‘One Summer in Crete

A light, heartwarming, escapist tale with passionate and amiable characters set on picturesque Crete (and the charming, rural island of Ikaria at the beginning). A great summer read.

Nikos Kazantzakis ‘Zorba, the Greek

Exploring the conflict between the rational and the artistic, the innermost being and the everyday existence, this marvellous classic novel became an international sensation and served as the basis for the famous movie, starring Anthony Quinn.

On Evia Island:

John Mole ‘It’s all Greek to me’

Brilliantly written with a terrific sense of humour, this is an honest and compassionate portrayal of life in rural Greece.

On Mainland Greece:

Anne Zouroudi ‘The Doctor of Thessaly

Part of The Mysteries of the Greek detective, this brilliant detective novel is full of deception and mystery, lies and hidden truth. The story is made delightful and easy to read by the vivid and dazzling descriptions of rural Greek life throughout the entire narrative. (I highly recommend all the books of the series.)

On Hydra Island:

Karen Swan ‘The Greek Escape’

Enjoyable summer read—perfect for the summer—that transports the reader to the picturesque island of Hydra.
