How did Blue Dream come true in Epidauros?
Nine years ago, on the quiet street of Policlitou, in Old Epidauros, a new business opened its doors. Vicky and James made their dream come true: they launched their very own SSI-affiliated dive school in the heart of the ancient Greek town. The Martins were experienced divers for many years, and holidays for them meant diving all around the world with their 2 children. They now offer diving experiences and SSI courses for divers of all levels and abilities.
Their roots
Vicky had a long-time connection with this charming old town, as her parents bought a holiday home in Epidauros, and she spent her teenage summers here. It is no surprise that she is greeted with a broad smile wherever she goes, as most of the shop owners partied and hung out with her during those hot Greek summers. James soon joined Vicky after they started dating, and he too befriended a lot of people here. While we were enjoying a drink together in a tavern named after the Greek god of the sea, he teased the waiter by mentioning the old photo of him as a cheeky 5-year-old boy.
Running the business
Nonetheless, it is not just the locals who are fond of the Martins; their 5-star reviews show that their customers are too. I can definitely second that. They run their business with great care: whether it is about looking after their divers, providing well-maintained, quality equipment or ensuring health and safety – this hard-working couple makes sure they deliver the best service possible and let you truly live the Scuba Blue Dream.
The diving experience
Diving with Vicky and James is honestly magical.
Right at the beginning, when getting your scuba gear, they make sure that you have a kit that is not only practical but that you feel comfortable in, to ensure the best possible experience. Then you walk down to the port with Vicky as James transports the tanks and other gear from the ’office’. Once on the boat, you can choose to either sit at the bow of the boat for some sun or near the back for a shady spot.
James expertly commandeers the boat, whilst Vicky helps you set up your kit; the boat ride is an amazing experience by itself, but it is only the lead-up to the true magic. Once you arrive at one of the many amazing dive sites that they know [and can tell you fabulous stories about], you are given a briefing, and they make sure you are at ease with what you are doing. Then you enter the ocean…
Once in the water, both James and Vicky can guide you to all the best spots and show you all of the marvellous marine life that the Peloponnese is home to. Their calming presence in the deep blue can come only with years of experience and a true love for what they do. When doing scuba diving courses, they are perfect teachers, demonstrating the skill and then letting you do it until you are confident, but also making sure you know that you are safe with them in case the confidence does not come as quickly as you may like.
